It depends on whether the app is still unlocked on your device. There are two situations:
If you're still signed in and the app opens normally — your device still holds your encryption key, so you can change your PIN without losing anything:
Profile menu → Change PIN → Forgot PIN? → we email you a verification code → set a new PIN. All your data stays intact.
If you're locked out at the PIN screen — your data cannot be recovered. Not by us, not by anyone. Budget Flow is end-to-end encrypted with a key derived from your PIN. We never see your PIN, and our server only stores encrypted data. Tapping "Forgot PIN?" on the lock screen lets you start over with a new PIN, but your existing data is permanently unreadable.
Do this now: store your PIN in a password manager (1Password, Bitwarden, Apple Passwords). It is the only thing that can decrypt your data.
Yes. Sign in with the same email on your other device and enter your PIN — your data decrypts there.
If you've been using Budget Flow since before multi-device support: the app will ask you once to "Sync Your Encryption Key" and enter your PIN. This takes about two seconds and uploads your key in encrypted form so other devices can unlock it. Do this before switching phones or deleting the app — without it, your data can't be opened anywhere else.
Your PIN is still never sent to us. Only a version of your key that's locked with your PIN, which is useless to anyone who doesn't know it.
Open the app → tap your profile picture (top-right) → Export all data (.csv). You can export everything or filter by date range. The export includes accounts, income streams, buckets, fixed expenses, earmarks, goals, transactions, and transfers.
